Weisser Fleck is an artistic intervention, living artwork, a scientific experiment, and a conceptual provocation for urban maintenance practices. The project consists of ‘drawing’ a 10-meter diameter circle on the façade of a housing block in Vienna by removing the thin layer of microoganisms that occupy the surface of the building. The aim is to highlight the existence of this biopatina, demonstrate its benefits to urban life, and challenge our current maintenance protocols for city surfaces.

A single gesture of many meanings.

Aesthetically, the project consists of a single gesture: the removal of matter from a building surface. The action is materially subtractive, but visually additive: removing matter creates an image in negative space, in the shape of a circle. Urban surfaces consist of images as much as materials, and this project straddles both dimensions, while allowing for an open visual and material evolution from the moment of creation. Once established, this circle will slowly be reclaimed and re-occupied.

A quick, but lasting demonstration.

It took only a few hours to remove the almost 60 year old biopatina from this façade, but the effects on and beyond the surface are considerable. By bringing together architecture, art, and geo-microbiological science, this semi-permanent experiment explores urban biodiversity, while engaging residents and the public in learning about what makes healthy, sustainable environments.

A violent, illuminating provocation.

This mechanical removal of surface matter is a violent killing of the microorganisms embedded into the building surface. It is a necessary destructive act against non human life, to trigger a critical examination of what urban surfaces should look like. Removing biopatina from one building can show us why we should welcome it to buildings and cities more broadly.

What is biopatina?

Biopatina is a micro-milimeter layer of microorganisms that grows on outer building surfaces. This double micro- level means we can’t perceive the life of biopatina with the naked eye. Instead, it often appears to us as stains or miscoloration, and is perceived as evidence of buildings’ age, wear, and neglect. Many of us imagine biopatina as the grime of urban pollution that stains the surfaces of our cities and must be cleaned or removed, but it turns out to be – in the simplest terms – life.

Weißer Fleck ist eine künstlerische Intervention, ein lebendiges Kunstwerk, ein wissenschaftliches Experiment, und eine konzeptionelle Provokation für städtische Wartungspraktiken. Das Projekt besteht darin, einen Kreis mit einem Durchmesser von 10 Metern auf die Fassade eines Wohnblocks in Wien zu „zeichnen“, wobei eine dünne Schicht von Mikroorganismen entfernt wird, die die Oberfläche des Gebäudes bedecken. Ziel ist es, die Existenz dieser Biopatina hervorzuheben, ihre Vorteile für das urbane Leben aufzuzeigen, und unsere derzeitigen Wartungsprotokolle für Stadtoberflächen zu hinterfragen.

Eine einzige Geste mit vielen Bedeutungen.

Ästhetisch betrachtet besteht das Projekt aus einer einzigen Geste: dem Entfernen von Material von einer Gebäudeoberfläche. Die Aktion ist materiell subtraktiv, aber visuell additiv: das Entfernen von Material erschafft ein Bild im negativen Raum, in Form eines Kreises. Urbane Oberflächen bestehen aus Bildern sowie aus Materialien, und dieses Projekt überbrückt beide Dimensionen, während es ab dem Moment der Kreation eine offene visuelle und materielle Evolution ermöglicht. Wenn dieses System einmal etabliert, wird dieser Kreis langsam zurückerobert und wiederbesetzt.

Eine schnelle, aber dauerhafte Demonstration.

Es dauerte nur einige Stunden, um die beinahe 60 Jahre alte Biopatina von dieser Fassade zu entfernen, aber die Auswirkungen auf und über die Oberfläche hinausgehend, sind erheblich. Durch die Zusammenführung von Architektur, Kunst, und geomikrobiologischer Wissenschaft erforscht dieses semi-permanente Experiment die urbane Biodiversität, während es die Bewohner und die Öffentlichkeit darin einbindet, mehr über gesunde, nachhaltige Umgebungen zu lernen.

Eine gewaltsame, erhellende Provokation.

Das mechanische Entfernen von Oberflächenmaterial ist ein gewaltsames Töten der Mikroorganismen, die in die Gebäudeoberfläche eingebettet sind. Es ist ein notwendiger destruktiver Akt gegen nicht-menschliches Leben, um eine kritische Untersuchung darüber auszulösen, wie urbane Oberflächen aussehen sollten. Das Entfernen von Biopatina von einem Gebäude kann uns zeigen, warum wir sie allgemein auf Gebäuden und in Städten willkommen heißen sollten.

Was ist Biopatina?

Biopatina ist eine mikro-millimeter dünne Schicht von Mikroorganismen, die auf äußeren Gebäudeoberflächen wächst. Diese doppelte Mikroebene bedeutet, dass wir das Leben der Biopatina mit bloßem Auge nicht wahrnehmen können. Stattdessen erscheint sie uns oft in der Form von Flecken oder Verfärbungen, und wird als Beweis für das Alter, die Abnutzung, und die Vernachlässigung von Gebäuden wahrgenommen. Viele von uns stellen sich Biopatina als den Dreck der städtischen Verschmutzung vor, der die Oberflächen unserer Städte befleckt und somit gereinigt oder entfernt werden muss, aber es stellt sich heraus, dass sie – einfach gesagt – Leben ist.
